What Does a Beauty Therapist Do?

Beauty therapists – often referred to as beauticians – specialise in the provision of a wide variety of treatments and services, performed to enhance and improve both physical appearance and confidence. As it is fundamentally impossible to live a happy and content life without pride in personal appearance, beauty therapists have the potential to make a real difference in the lives of their customers.

What Does a Beauty Therapist Do? Beauty therapists are experts in facial and body care, various skin care and skin improvement treatments. They have a strong knowledge of skin biology and cosmetic chemistry.

 

Daily duties vary in accordance with the specific area of beauty therapy, though typical responsibilities may include:

  • Discussing available treatment options with new clients

  • Performing treatments including manicures, pedicures and hair removal

  • Applying makeup and other topical treatments

  • Providing spray tanning and UV tanning services

  • Offering advice on skincare, haircare and use of cosmetics

  • Identification and treatment of common minor skin problems

  • Performing massage and other therapeutic services

  • General customer service and sales

 

Am I Right For the Job?

It is impossible to succeed in the beauty therapy industry without genuine passion and commitment. Beauticians are required to have a vested interest in cosmetics and the use thereof, along with the vision required to deliver results that exceed clients’ expectations. As an industry of pure positivity, it is also important to be extremely outgoing, friendly and approachable at all times.

The character traits and key skills required for success in the beauty therapy industry include:

  • An in-depth knowledge of cosmetics and cosmetic procedures

  • Advanced practical skills for the provision of treatments

  • Patience and the ability to work in a challenging environment

  • A helpful and positive attitude

  • Outstanding listening and communication skills

  • A genuine passion for people and the desire to deliver results

  • Advanced business acumen if setting up a new business

To work in the beauty therapy industry, you will first need to develop a range of essential theoretical and practical skills. You will pick up and refine your skills and talents as you progress, but breaking into the industry means first studying beauty therapy at a relatively high level.

General Beauty Therapy

 Level 2

 

Duration: ten (10) months

Location: Hazard Skills Training Centre - CTDI

​

Overview:

To equip Learners with broad knowledge, understanding and skills necessary to demonstrate occupational competence in the workplace in the Beauty industry enabling Learners to perform a range of beauty treatments and services and to provide a competency based skills qualification in beauty therapy that combines both subject knowledge and industry skills that are essential for the Learner’s development and career advancement. This course also enables the Learners to develop beauty therapy skills, techniques, and gain knowledge and understanding to prepare Learners to progress to level 3 vocational learning within the beauty industry. We provide a progression structure for Learners to develop the workplace skills and personal attributes essential for successful working lives within the beauty industry.

The technical qualification is suitable for anyone either in full-time employment, or progressing from a Level 1 qualification or those who are able to start a qualification at Level 2.

Objectives:

 

  • Challenge your perceptions of Beauty Therapy, giving you ample opportunities to demonstrate your competency and comprehension of the course materials.

  • Help you to develop a strong foundation of knowledge and competency that can be transferred into your career.

  • Practice Health and Safety

  • Practice Good And Carry Out Salon Reception Duties

  • Develop and maintain effectiveness at work

  • Promote additional services or products to customers

  • Provide a manicure treatment

  • Provide a pedicure treatment

  • Carry out waxing services

  • Carry out facial services

  • Enhance the appearance of eyelashes and eyebrows

  • Carryout Makeup application

 

Entry Requirement:

Any NVQ-J Level 1 certification or successful completion of the HEART NSTA Trust Diagnostic Test or at least one (1) CSEC or GCE subject.

 

Qualification Gained:

  • NVQ-J Level 2 Certificate in General Beauty Therapy. The NVQ-J Certification is recognized in all CARICOM and Commonwealth countries.
